Summer is here and it’s time for cookouts, picnics, ball games, parties, and more. But before you reach for the ice cream, popsicles, and sodas, stop and consider some healthier choices for your summer smile. High-sugar summer foods can be detrimental to the health of our teeth, but luckily there are some great-tasting, satisfying alternatives!
Trade Sugary Treats for Fruits with High Water Content
Not only are fruits better on your waistline, but they’re better for your smile, too! Fruits with high water content, such as apples, pears, grapes, and watermelon will also keep you hydrated and help rinse bacteria from teeth and can help maintain gum health. If you’re in the mood for something cold, put some grapes or watermelon slices in the freezer for a few minutes before enjoying them.
Find the Cheese Plate
If you’re at a cocktail party or outdoor potluck, seek out the cheese plate for some tooth-friendly goods. Cheese is a great choice, not just because of the fortifying calcium inside, but because it also helps your mouth to produce saliva, which kills the bacteria responsible for cavities.
Pass the Protein
High-protein, low-sugar foods can help provide a barrier against acid and bacteria on your teeth. Try to start your meal with protein to help protect teeth from acidic foods or sugar further down the menu. Just don’t forget to floss when you are finished!
Get Fancy and Use a Straw
Enjoy your drinks with a straw to help protect teeth from acidic juices, alcohol, and sugar. Even if you’re just sipping ice-cold lemon water, a straw will help keep the acid in the lemons from assaulting your enamel.
Choose Low-Sugar Beverages
Forget the soda and reach for water instead. If you’re having adult beverages, try to skip the margaritas and mudslides and go for lower-sugar choices. And be sure to drink water with your cocktails—the acid and sugar in these drinks lingers on your teeth all day and builds with every sip. Rinsing regularly with water between will help keep your smile in check!
Stay Away from Sticky
Got a sweet tooth at the movies? If you must indulge, try to choose candy that isn’t sticky and doesn’t sit in your mouth for a long time. A small chocolate bar is a better choice than licorice, Sour Patch Kids, suckers, or taffy. And, of course, be sure to brush and floss thoroughly after you’re finished enjoying your treat.
